Air Gear Info!

Fri Jun 13, 2008, 12:51 PM
If you dont know about the manga Air Gear you can access it at: [link]

Manga:
Air Gear is about the life of Itsuki Minami "Ikki", also known as "Baby face" and "Lil (and Little) Crow". The name "Crow" came from the fact that there is currently a real living baby crow in his hair sometimes who he does not seem to mind, and his friends along with the latest in-universe trend, Air Trecks. The early parts of the story carry out the introduction of characters that eventually join Ikki, and as the story progresses, it focuses on their roles as Storm Riders and their quest to be on the top of the Trophaeum Tower. It won the 2006 Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category.

Air Gear Terms:

Air Trecks- Basically, these are high-end, customizable, motorized inline skates. Generally, Air Trecks (abbreviated as AT) are very expensive (running normally ¥100,000 a pair; which is about $1,000), requiring regular maintenance and tuning. These self-propelled trick skates are powered by a precisely calibrated air cushion system, that allows AT users to "fly"; enabling them to perform daring leaps and tricks. Each pair is also installed with a special data support network via a program called READ, which allows Riders to access performance data on another Rider from the data stored on a memory card inserted inside the AT.

Kings- While there are various 'Roads', eight are considered the most powerful and are owned by a single Rider known as the Road's 'King'--or 'Keeper'. "Kings" are the most talented and professional of Riders, having their own Regalia, which serves as proof of their status and strength.

Part Wars- These are official battles between Storm Rider teams. Originally an online forum for trading Air Trecks parts which evolved into a place where Riders can issue challenges for parts posted on the board. A Rider can wager just about anything from parts to territory, to even team emblems; although wagering team emblems is considered highly unusual due to the risk involved of one's team being disbanded. Nevertheless, Riders can compete in Parts Wars simply to improve their team's ranking. Qualification for class advancement requires three consecutive wins against a team of equal class or one win against a team of superior class; and for each classes, there is a unique battle mode that must be conducted in the Parts Wars:

F-Class: "Dash"
These are F-Class battles wherein a representative from both teams race against each other along a set course. Riders can claim victory by clearing the course first, or by knocking the other representative off the course, outside help is prohibited

E-Class: "Hurdle"
These are E-Class battles where the objective is to retrieve the item at the goal, while clearing obstacles such as buildings. Typically the usage of tricks or regalias are beneficial in these battles

D-Class: "Cube"
These are D-Class battles which pits Riders in one-on-one fights inside confined areas.

C-Class: "Air"
These are C-Class battles where the object is to knock off the opposing team while standing atop poles.

B-Class: "Disk"
These are battles consisting of 3 set rounds, wherein a disk keeper must try to score points by advancing into the opposing side's goal while the opposing side defends and attempts to capture the disk.

A-Class: "Balloon"
These are A-Class battles where the objective is to retrieve the emblems from within a balloon. This is a five-on-five team match with each teammate performing a specific role: The "panther" chases the balloon, the "decoy" lures enemies away, the "ultimate" is responsible for fighting and disarming the enemy, the "middle" assists the others and the "keeper" stops enemies before they grab the goal. All this while following the balloon.

READ- A downloadable program designed for cellphones. The program itself allows Riders to access and download various details on another Rider from the data logged on that Rider's AT memory stick. Accessed information can range from basic stats (such as top speeds and max. airtime) to such detailed data as AT specs, performance levels (including average reaction times and spin radius) and number of moves executed.

Regalia- These are special parts made specifically for the Keeper of each Road which tap directly into their individual abilities. They also serve as the "Keeper's Proof" which distinguishes the Rider in possession as the one, true Keeper of that Road. Regalia, in themselves, vary from part to part with a wide variety of designs, but all Regalia utilize the air or wind in some manner. For example, Ringo's Thorn Reaper is a pair of modified rear wheel motors that unravel into thorn-like whips when in active mode. To utilize the Thorn Reaper requires extraordinary hip strength, but (like most Regalia) are extraordinarily powerful to the extent of severe injury, even to its Keeper. To that effect, Regalia are tuned and adjusted regularly to, firstly, avoid needless injury to the Keeper and, secondly, to avoid the possibility of the part's destruction brought upon by overexertion on the Keeper's part.

Roads- Each AT user has their own unique road. The roads are markings on any surface left by practicing the techniques. Over time, the markings accumulate and become a road. Each King has their own road as well. For instance, Agito is of the Bloody Road while Spitfire is of the Flame Road. Other roads include the Rising Road, the Thorns Road, the Stink Road, the Hurricane Road and the Wing Road. The rest have yet to be revealed. Roads are also the sensation a rider gets when they ride AT's a certain way or a special trick resulting from "riding" their road. An example is the Blood Road where riders usually find thrills in the scarring of other riders and people, and one of the few Roads wherein a rider isn't required to possess Regalia.

Storm Riders- The general name for AT users, although occasionally dubbed just "Riders". In the AT World, Riders are categorized by ranks which are broken into 6 class divisions: F-Class (for beginners), E-Class, D-Class, C-Class, B-Class, and A-Class. There is also an S-Class, or Special Class, which is above A-Class and is the highest rank a Rider can reach. One can improve their ranking through a Parts War battle.
